Placide Cappeau (France, 1808–1877) Born October 25, 1808, at 8 p.m., son of a cooper. At age 8, a playmate accidentally shot him in the hand, requiring amputation. He pursued academics instead of his father’s trade. The shooter’s father funded half his education. He attended local school and College Royal d’Avignon (won first prize in drawing despite handicap), studied literature in Nîmes, and law in Paris (licensed 1831). Became a wine and spirits merchant but focused on literature. A local priest, Father Petitjean, was in his community
